A court will not finalize a divorce until the parents have established a plan of child support that adequately covers the living expenses of the child and maintains their standard of living.

Food, clothing, and a safe home are part of any child’s wellbeing. Each parent is responsible for providing for their child after the split becomes final.
When determining child support, there are two parties involved – the custodial parent and the non-custodial parent. The custodial parent, or the payee, is the parent who lives with the child and takes care of their day-to-day needs. The non-custodial parent, or payor, is the other parent. They typically have visitation rights or they help in making important decisions.

Even if a parent has no legal or physical custody rights, they still may be ordered to pay child support to the other party.
