Domestic Violence

Any family that has dealt with domestic violence issues is in a fragile state. Courts will review criminal records when determining visitation of custody arrangements and whether the accused parent's rights to their child may be in jeopardy. When you need a lawyer experienced in domestic violence and protecting your rights and the rights of your family, Almonacy Law will stand and fight on your behalf.

How is domestic violence defined in New Jersey?

Domestic violence is a pattern of physical, emotional, verbal, or sexual abuse which can include threats, intimidation, isolation, or financial control. It can continue for a long period of time and often becomes more severe and frequent over time.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender and affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. It occurs in both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships and can happen to intimate partners who are married, living together, or dating.

How can I protect myself against domestic violence?

A Temporary Restraining Order or TRO can be the first step in protecting your self from further abuse and violence. You also have the right to file a civil complaint (designed to protect you) and a criminal complaint (designed to punish the abuser). You can get a TRO by contacting the Family Part of the Superior Court.

To receive information about contacting a court for a TRO, call your State or local police department or call the Statewide Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-572-SAFE (7233).
